EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Ryan Gwin is a second-year undergraduate student planning on majoring in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Global Studies. Post UC Berkeley, he hopes on moving to Latin America and join an NGO. His main goals for this upcoming year pushes for the spread of information and interest in sustainability all across the greek community. Primarily this will be accomplished through efforts to rebrand and create consistency on all platforms. It was not until his friends brought him to his first GTG meeting did he realize how imperative it was to pay attention to the health of the world around us. He wants to inspire people who were raised in settings that did not value or develop a consciousness about our impact on the environment.
RYAN GWIN

EDUCATION
Sienna Smith is a second-year undergraduate student who plans on declaring double majors Society & Environment and Sociology. She strives to bring awareness--her own and that of others--to the relationship between and separation of nature and culture. She is perpetually both fascinated and horrified by food systems in the United States, thus inspiring her to divest in animal agriculture by exercising consumer power. Foremost, she believes each person to be capable of practicing methods of ecological harm reduction, starting by informing our consumer habits with critical applications of environmental science.
SIENNA SMITH
"Our education committee is responsible for assisting each chapter with their completion of sustainability education requirements, as mandated in a newly established by-law. Committee members will practice and improve their public speaking skills, giving them the tools to serve as excellent messengers of environmental knowledge. We will ensure each chapter has received and engaged with our waste management presentation, and will also spend the duration of the semester crafting innovative informational presentations on a variety of environmental topics relevant to Cal Greeks and the local city of Berkeley."

"My Committee focuses heavily on viewing environmental issues through an environmental justice lens. The point it to understand the societal structures in place that have created environmental injustices against specific communities of people. Our committee's activities are meant to empower folks to take ownership of their own capacity/voice/decision, de-stigmatize the conversation around basic needs, increase community understanding of environmental justice, and create space for people to engage in environmental activism. This is executed by applying to grants, such as TGIF and the Greek Opportunity Fund, or planning exciting fundraising events with businesses in order to expand opportunities for our club! This committee is developing this semester to also add to our educational presentations information regarding the financial and business side of our club’s sustainable projects, such as cost analysis of using compostable cups vs plastic. "The Data Collection team will be in charge of walking through fraternities during their parties to research their waste management practices. During each of these walks the assigned member will be filling out a questionnaire to determine if these fraternities are properly disposing of cans and making it clearly marked what items can be thrown in what bin. This will provide critical information that the education committee can use to tailor their presentations to specific fraternities."
